D’Linn – Personal History
Born at the hospital base located in Boca Raton, Florida in 1946 and named Donna Lynn Woodcock, life began and continues as an exciting adventure. Her creative spirit was witnessed early by her parents who were nothing short of astonished at her first mural completed on the seats of their brand new 1948 convertible with a tube of red lipstick found in Mommy’s purse.
Photographs of her were taken with leaves under her feet; placed there to keep the heat of the Texas sidewalk from “burning my feet.” Yes, from a very early age her creative mind was always working. The first born of a multitude, Donna had family obligations at a very early age and matured way beyond her years. Moving often due to government requests, she saw a lot of the United States and must have been infected by the travel bug. Traveling has a value and richness in life that is irreplaceable. There is an understanding of the sameness in our humanity that comes through experiencing many different cultural geographies.
Donna graduated from Moore High School located in Moore, Oklahoma in 1964; attended East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma University in Norman and graduated from the University of Missouri with a BA in 1964. Although not trained to teach, she began her career as an elementary school art teacher in Raytown, Mo. Teaching was a marvelous experience and she was able to teach students from age 6 to graduate level college students during her 16 years of providing instruction in art.
After her first marriage dissolved, Donna legally created an artistic name so that she would always sign with her own name. By contracting her first and middle name she came up with the name, D’Linn. All artwork since 1975 has been so signed.
Technically trained as a muralist with strong Bauhaus influences, D’Linn received her Masters Degree in Art from the University of Missouri in 1977. The Bauhaus concept was based on the structure, the foundation of all the arts. This “foundational” aspect of the artist’s education has been a living thread through out the entire body of work created from 1966 to the present date. Color creates a specific vibration and is an elemental aspect of the pieces she creates.
The body of work falls into four distinct categories; realism, sur-realism, abstract and impressionistic graphic. All are “contemporary art”. The artist loves the power of light and color. Most of her work is done from her intuitive nature and a plethora of life experiences. This allows the viewer to create their own interpretation. The work has a strong sense of color and line no matter what the category.
Because dimension is also an important aspect of her work, many of her pieces (especially the collage work) have a sculptural quality.
D’Linn has been recognized as an award winning and outstanding artist in Florida, North Carolina, Illinois and Hawai’i.
Her children and grandchildren live in North Carolina, Alabama and Hawai`i.
Married and living in Hawaii, the artist is available at her garden studio for viewing of work in production. D’Linn makes art to express herself and to impress the viewer into an experience that would not have occurred without the art/viewer relationship. It is a mutual love of the art that brings life to this marriage of artist and viewer.
